Because of my reading habits, I often get advertisements for new books, book sales, solicitations for donating books to worthy causes and a host of other mailings about books. I recently was taken back when I saw advertisements for a "new" kind of Bible.
I knew about study Bibles, women's Bibles, children's Bibles, prophecy Bibles, etc. But the "new" one was a "social justice" Bible. What's next? Since when has the Word of God become so specialized? The Scriptures already address women's issues, husband and wife issues, children, morality, justice, benevolence, the Second Coming and a host of other relavant topics. Why all the special editions when those subjects are already addressed?
There seems to be no end to those who use the Bible as a way to push a particular agenda. Highlighting certain passages and adding footnotes to emphasize a particular theme is not necessary with the Word of God. What IS necessary is for Christians to faithfully read, meditate on the Word and share what they are learning with someone else. Jesus taught the disciples that the Spirit would guide them and we have the same promise today. Read John 14 and 15 where Jesus addresses their inadeqacies and His sufficiency.
Get a good Bible translation that is just text and begin reading. Daily reading will be the best thing you and I can do to grow in Christ. Leave the partitioning of the Word to others and faithfully follow God's text. You will be enlightened, blessed and ready to be used by God.
